Need more than 5 a day?
The Alt Text Meta plugin does this automatically for every image on your WordPress site or Shopify store, new uploads and your whole back catalogue, from £3/month.
What is alt text?
Alt text (alternative text) is a short written description of an image, stored in the image's HTML. Screen readers read it aloud for visually impaired visitors, and search engines use it to understand what your images show, which helps your pages rank in Google Images and web search.
What makes good alt text?
Good alt text describes what is visibly in the image in under 125 characters, without starting with "image of" or "picture of". It should be specific: "Golden retriever puppy sleeping on a blue sofa" beats "dog". Filenames like IMG_2041.jpg and generic words like "photo" or "image" help no one.
Why use an AI alt text generator?
Writing alt text by hand for hundreds of images takes hours. AI looks at each image and writes an accurate, natural description in seconds. This free tool shows you the quality: the WordPress plugin and Shopify app apply it to your whole media library automatically, including titles, captions and descriptions.
Is my image stored?
No. Your image is processed in memory to generate the text and is not saved. Free use is limited to 5 images per day per visitor to keep the tool fast and free for everyone.
